The majority of our fruit tree varieties are ordered in bare root from Bailey Nursery, a wholesale grower based in Newport, MN. We order in some containerized trees from Green Value Nursery in Hugo, MN.
WHAT DOES "BARE ROOT" MEAN?
It's pretty simple - rather than the trees being delivered to us already potted in soil we know nothing about, planted in plastic pots we don't want to have to recycle, they are shipped to us in bundles, roots exposed. We then pot them up in fiber based pots using soil and amendments approved for organic use.
WHAT'S THE BENEFIT OF DOING IT THIS WAY?
Bare root trees do not get foliar treatments of neonicotinoids, and because we plant them ourselves, the container soil also remains pesticide free.
Bare root trees potted at our shop tend to develop healthy, unrestricted root systems. We avoid girdling roots and other structural problems often encouraged by trees sitting around in plastic pots.
You'll get a well-groomed tree. We prune any problematic branch attachments, and thin out any unnecessary root growth. Nothing like a haircut!
HOW DO WE SELL BARE ROOT FRUIT TREES?
When we have everything planted, you can come and browse our trees, find your favorite, and buy it. HOWEVER! Because we pot the trees in early spring, rather than the previous season, we need to ensure they are indeed viable. To do this, we “hold them” at our store for you until they are leafed out appropriately. This can take anywhere from a few weeks, to over a month, depending on the variety. We'll give you a ring when they are ready to go home with you.
